Radiofrequency Microneedling or Morpheus 8 - Is There a Difference?

Oftentimes, we have patients calling in asking for “Morpheus 8” when what they really mean is “Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling”.

All RF microneedling devices work the same: sterile needles pierce the skin and simultaneously deliver radiofrequency energy. The energy heats the surrounding tissues to create a micro-injury that causes the body to initiate a natural healing response. In addition to creating thicker, firmer skin, microneedling plus radiofrequency energy targeted into the deeper layers of the skin can have a ton of benefits.

Moral of the story: PFAM RF Microneedling and Morpheus 8 are basically equals in that they BOTH combine Radiofrequency energy with traditional Microneedling. “Morpheus 8” is simply a buzzy brand name for RF Microneedling.

Our Machine is called the Pixel8-RF. When I was researching RF technology a couple years ago, this one came with rave reviews from a dermatologist colleague who I admire in LA, Dr. Jason Emer. It is very comparable to the Morpheus 8. We can treat the face, neck, chest and other body areas with the Pixel8. It is safe for the full spectrum of skin types given its highly titratable settings and option to use either insulated or non-insulated microneedling tips.

Radiofrequency Microneedling can be an effective treatment for:

  • Smoother, firmer skin.
  • Smaller, tighter pores.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improved texture.
  • Reduced visibility of acne scarring and other scars.
  • Brighter, more youthful-looking skin.
  • Loose and sagging skin
  • Stretch marks

If these are the results you’re looking for, we’ve been doing this all along. ;)

What To Expect

The results of Radiofrequency Microneedling are amazing, but one of the best parts of this treatment is the minimal downtime. Prior to the treatment beginning, we will use our special topical numbing technique to ensure the process is comfortable. In addition, we have the option of pairing our FDA-approved pain management nitrous oxide gas delivery system, Pro-Nox. The actual treatment will last roughly 45 minutes depending on the area(s) being treated. As the device makes micro-wounds in the skin, radiofrequency waves enter to do their work. This will cause a sunburn like heat sensation that is very tolerable.

After-treatment care is one of the most important factors in having results you love. Expect the skin to be slightly sensitive and red with possible light swelling for the first 24 hours. A lineup of clean skincare products will be recommended to keep the skin protected and healing in the days following your treatment. Normal activity can be immediately resumed although we recommend planning this treatment at least a week before any major events, and taking 24 hours off of sweaty exercise.

Exact results will vary by individual. For optimal results, a series of treatments is recommended, 3-6 sessions separated 4-6 weeks apart. Visible changes in the skin can be seen 2-6 months after treatment, during which time collagen production increases to firm, tighten, soften and brighten the skin. These results can be long lasting, with recommended maintenance treatments at least once a year.

The sooner you begin Microneedling, the better (ideally in your 20s and 30s!). We begin our slow loss of collagen as early as mid-20s, and by the time 30s comes around, most people are noticing the downstream effects of the collagen loss with more resting wrinkles, crepey skin and loss of elasticity. Staying on top of maintaining your skin with Microneedling will help to keep it looking younger, longer!
